What is Sound Insulation testing?
Sound insulation tests are required to be carried out to any new or refurbished dwelling in order to check elements of acoustic performance in accordance with Part E of the Building Regulations. This acoustic test will confirm compliance has been met on finished wall and floor structures.
The test will be carried out for both airborne and impact sound insulation, airborne, e.g. speech and impact such as footsteps.
Sound insulation tests must either meet the minimum or exceed the performance standards as set out in the Building Regulations Approved Document E
What do I need to do to prepare for a Sound Insulation Test?
To complete a sound test
- We require a complete set of GA drawings including details of construction.
- The building needs to be completed with windows, doors etc. fitted.
- Tests should be conducted in completed but unfurnished, uncarpeted rooms.
- Each set of tests takes approximately 2 hours as a typical example
Is Sound Insulation testing only required in residential dwellings?
Sound testing can also be required in a number of other building types, such as, commercial & industrial premises, offices, schools, medical rooms (Audiology Room certification) and also where there is a mixed use premises such as a bar area with a residential dwelling situated above. This type of acoustic test is typically required for planning purposes.
