Since 2003 the construction of new schools or the building of new classrooms within an existing school are governed by legislation within the Building Regulations, Building Bulletin 93 (BB93). To comply with this legislation there are various criteria laid down to building construction and the methods of noise insulation within the building to ensure that both pupils and staff are in a suitable acoustic environment. Reverberation times within a classroom or teaching area – BB93 stipulates what reverberation times should be within a classroom area, which range according to the room application. We will visit site and carry out noise testing to establish if you are complying and issue a report with mitigation measures as necessary to conform to the criteria.
- Sound insulation to external walls should meet the necessary criteria to protect internal rooms from external noise sources
- Music practice rooms and studios should be adequately insulated from adjoining teaching areas and classrooms
- Internal and external plant noise i.e. from air conditioners should meet the required noise criteria and should be suitably acoustically treated or enclosed.
