Workplace Noise Assessment Ellesmere Port
NoiseAir recently undertook a workplace noise risk assessment for approximately 50 employees at a metal manufacturing site in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. The company specialises in the manufacture and supply of complex alloy systems and metals. Following a recent audit and in accordance with HSE requirements, a ‘noise at work’ risk assessment was required to assess the noise levels of various machinery and manufacturing processes, which could potentially put employees at risk of excessive noise exposure.
Our consultants attended the site to carry out the survey and observed various operations in action. Employees were individually assessed to calculate their noise exposure levels throughout the working day. Following the survey, the company was provided with an acoustic report summarising findings and appropriate recommendations to protect employees’ hearing. This included staff training, treatment of noise at source via various noise mitigation measures, and allocating designated hearing protection zones throughout the premises.
Workplace noise assessments are carried out to determine whether employees are being exposed to excessive noise levels when calculated over a normalised eight-hour time period. There is extensive research to suggest that noise induced hearing loss is related to the amount of sound energy entering the ear over an extended period of time. Additionally, sudden high intensity noise levels are also considered as part of a noise risk assessment.
Are you an employer and unsure of your health and safety responsibilities with regards to noise in the workplace? Did you know that by law, (and in accordance with The Control of Noise at Work Regulations (2005) ), employers are obliged to protect employees’ hearing by regularly carrying out a noise risk assessment and identifying measures to reduce noise exposure to staff.
